The
second volume of the journal is devoted to the theme
"Heterodoxies:
Construction of Identities and Otherness in medieval and early
modern Europe"
This
has been the topic of a seminar in honour of Natalie Zemon-Davis,
held in Hermoupolis (Syros, Greece) on July 20-21, 1998.
This
second volume, bringing together medieval, early modern and
modern historians from Greece, USA, Britain, France and Italy,
explores the question of the construction of identities in the
domains of society, ethnicity, religion, cultural contacts,
exchanges and representations, spanning a period starting from
the 8th century and ending in the 19th century.
The volume also includes an interview with Hayden White, published
here under the title «The Ironic Poetics of late Modernity.
An Interview with Hayden White». The interview took place when
White came to Athens in December 1999 at the invitation of Historein
and the National Book Centre. White gave a lecture entitled
«History as Expectation and Fulfillment» as part of a series
of lectures and debates taking place during an exhibition on
«The Greek Historical Book from the Restoration of Democracy
to the Present", a project undertaken by the members of Historein
in collaboration with the National Book Centre. During his visit,
Angelica Koufou and Margarita Miliori had the opportunity to
discuss with White his innovative and influential contribution
to historical thinking. This interview relates to the special
theme of this volume, considering White's leading role in the
discussion about historiography, narrative and the role of the
subject in the formation of the historical discourse.
Finally, this volume includes the Reviews section with a number
of contributions referring mostly to recently published works.
Through this section Historein seeks to promote crucial dialogue
within contemporary debates in the fields of history and the
humanities.
This volume also includes a Bulletin section, where correspondents
and contributors report on conferences, workshops, seminars,
and meetings that took place in Greece or elsewhere in the past
year, and represent the current state of activities in the particular
field of historical studies that Historein seeks to promote.
