Activities 1994- 1999

Throughout the last decade the Cultural & Intellectual History Society (CIHIS) has been engaged in several academic activities, which have evolved from short-scale postgraduate projects to national and international publications, workshops and conferences.



Postgraduate seminars & workshops

1. "Intellectual history in Greece: theoretical and critical approach of the work of its major representatives" (June 1994)
2. "Historiography and historicism: the German school and its influence on the Greek historiography" (June 1995)
3. "Culture and history: the term 'culture' and the influence of cultural studies on the historical discipline" (January 1996)
4. "Memory and history" (June 1997)
5. "Greek Enlightenment: Intellectuals and Ideas. Seminars with Alkis Angellou" (May-June 1999)



Academic meeting

"The Yugoslavia War and the international political scene" (EIE, May 1999) The aim of the meeting was to trace down and present the explanatory schemes concerning the war in Yugoslavia proposed by prominent Greek historians and political scientists, such as Nikos Alivizatos, Spyros Asdrachas, Filippos Iliou, Antonis Liakos, Antonis Manitakis, Vassilis Pesmazoglou.


Exhibition

"The Greek Historical Book from the Restoration of Democracy to the Present" (29/11-8/12/1999)
In cooperation with the National Book Center, CIHIS held an exhibition of historical books. The exhibition consisted of 400 titles by Greek and foreign writers published during the last 25 years concerning Greek history from the 15th century and on.
Within the context of the exhibition an analytical guide was published and several activities were organized. Specifically:
a/ "Greek historiography 1975-2000"
Discussants: Spyros Asdrachas, Christina Agriantoni, Antonis Liakos, Rica Benveniste, Vangelis Karamanolakis
b/ "Historical research and school education"
Discussants: Effi Avdela, Christina Veikou, Yiannis Mpafounis, Yiorgos Smpiliris, Dimitra Lambropoulou
c/ «History as expectation and Fulfillment» Lecture by Hayden White. Introduction and Presentation of the speaker by Angelica Koufou. Coordination by Antonis Liakos.



Publication

"Historein: A Review of the Past and Other Stories"
The articles published in the first volume of Historein cover a wide range of topics and represent different contemporary methodological approaches to history. This multiplicity reflects in a sense the fluidity and vibrancy that characterize the field of critical historiography today.
